SISSY PIE

Woke up yesterday morning to the sound of a jungle cat growling … errrr, to the sound of my sister mad at my little electric oven for burning the top of her normally perfect pound cake.

Naya’s horrible to hang out with in the morning.  Especially before breakfast.  She has a rather extreme version of the now world-famous Valdellon temper … mixed with sweetness though and oddball humor and often brilliant insight.

I suppose it would start to bug me if I woke up to this temper every day.  But on this occasion, the hummphs and scarrumphs from the kitchen put a huge smile on my face, made me jump up from bed and face the day with more than the usual joy.

My sister’s home!  Just for the month.  And living with me half the time.  It’s made me so happy!!!

Some people grow up with their siblings and never seem to really know them.  Naya, well, she has always been one of my soul friends.  Even if we weren’t related, we would have found each other somehow.

I would like to be her protective older sister, but I am in many ways the younger one … and so she laughs at my puny justifications for not going after what I want.  Because while I was hiding out practically pain-free in my cubicle all these years, she was hurting and living and learning and loving.  And now she is a woman who knows who she is.  And I’ll miss having her to talk to.

It’s a little heartbreaking for me, to tell you the truth, that Naya returns to her real life in Toronto tomorrow.

Typhoon season is back with a vengeance and my lovely, magical summer is ending … :(
