LOVING MY LIFE
May 31, 2008

My father called me at the office some years back, his voice booming over the network’s trunkline.  He was thinking of writing a book and wanted suggestions on publishers.  As we spoke, the administrators in the next cubicle exchanged strange looks.
Turns out … they were shocked that I actually had a Dad!
“Your father’s still alive?” asked one, [...]

CRUSHED
May 25, 2008

There’s this guy.
That I like.  Really like.
And have liked. For a long while now.
I know.  That he knows.
He isn’t, after all, stupid.
Or blind. Or deaf.
Or lost in space.
He is, in point of fact,
Incredibly fast on the uptake.
Which is why. I know.
He knows.

The only slow thing about him.
To tell you the truth.
Is the way he reacts to me.
Oh did I mention.
He doesn’t like [...]

SISSY PIE
May 24, 2008

Woke up yesterday morning to the sound of a jungle cat growling … errrr, to the sound of my sister mad at my little electric oven for burning the top of her normally perfect pound cake.
Naya’s horrible to hang out with in the morning.  Especially before breakfast.  She has a rather extreme version of the now world-famous Valdellon temper … [...]

CORNER OF THE SKY
May 18, 2008

“Rivers belong where they can ramble, eagles belong where they can fly, I’ve got to be where my spirit can run free … got to find my corner of the sky…”  Pippin

I don’t exactly know where I’m going.
Not in the big picture life sense anyway.
But I do know I’m glad about the road I didn’t take.
I had [...]

UPSIDE DOWN IS PERFECT
May 13, 2008

I walked a long stretch of beach yesterday morning, taking pictures.  Imagining my perfect life would look something like this …

Then I had to fly back to the city, back to the office.
And work made me angry.  Or at least it did yesterday.
Had to spend 12 hours at my desk catching up on the things I’d missed.  Had to scarf [...]

NIGHTS ON WHITE BEACH
May 12, 2008

fire dancers, sand and light sculptures, paper lanterns swaying in the breeze, chori burgers and wood fire burned pizzas washed down with margaritas and mojitos …
a couple of tipsy sisters at the end of every white beach night …

BORACAY BABES
May 10, 2008

Always had this fantasy of walking the stretch of White Beach in short shorts and a bikini top.

Well, yesterday, I did!  Along with Naya, home from Toronto.

We’re living on the quiet end of Boracay’s beach, in a resort with a wide expanse of empty white sand in front of it.  We’ve been walking aimlessly, eating amazing meals, taking [...]

ABOUT LAST NIGHT
May 8, 2008

Last night, for the first time in a long time, I felt like a real adult.
That must sound crazy, coming from a 35-year old.  But really, I always lived like an overgrown teenager, knowing there was some older guy to take care of me.
Now I know what it’s like to have to take care of myself.
At 2 am last night, I [...]

SNAPSHOTS OF MY MOM
May 3, 2008

The Delhi airport doesn’t have a smoking lounge.  My mother was shocked to discover this after we’d finally completed their tedious check-in process.  She could have suffered in silence.  But being her, she charmed the military men standing guard at the airport into letting her back out again … through all the security checks … just so she could have [...]

INNER QUIET
May 1, 2008

I went back to the Gandhi museum on a Monday … when I knew it would be closed.
I was the only visitor on the grounds that afternoon.
And so the gardener let me walk this path normally cordoned off from guests — the path tracing Gandhi’s footsteps to the exact spot where he was shot in 1948.
I stood [...]
